Product Description

This set of 3 ancient holy land pottery replicas represent different pottery styles found in the many archeological digs in the Holy Land and surrounding regions.  These are actual replicas of the styles of jugs found.  There is a 2 handled water pitcher, a single handled jug used for liquids such as wine or milk and a jug with a narrow neck and handles near this opening.  This one was probably used for storage or transporting of liquids.  A rope could be tied through the handles for ease of transport and hung from a saddle.  The height of these jugs vary from 5 to 6 inches.

The photos shown are samples of the pottery.   Each piece is handmade today by a potter in the Holy Land using the same techniques and the same clay from the land as in biblical times.  There are minor variations in the height, width and placement of handles from piece to piece as each piece is made one at a time. Each pottery jar is unique.

Because these pottery pieces are not glazed, it is not recommended that liquids for consumption be placed in them.  They may be used for ceremonial use only.  While it is true that these pieces were used everyday without glazing 2000 years ago, there were dietary rules set down for their use to prevent illness.  The clay even though it is baked, is still porous.   However, after rinsing them out with water, they may be used for storage of grains.

These pieces were made in Israel from native clays and imported to the U.S. by Osmun Gifts.
