Product Description

Dwellers in the Holy Land at the time of Christ used clay flasks to hold a variety of liquids.  Since the Holy Land was part of the Roman Empire, Roman flasks were popular. Most were made from clay as clay was plentiful and inexpensive.  Many were designed for a singular use and then tossed aside.   They came in all shapes and sizes and were designed to hold water, wine, oils, sauces, medicines, and perfumes.  This Roman Flask has a tall neck and a globular body.  There are side protusions for rope or twine.  This type of handle had 2 primary uses.  One was to be able to hang the flask from a wall or from a cart or saddle if traveling.  The other primary use was to use rope or string to tie down the cork or stopper securely in the flask so that the contents would not spill.

This Roman flask clay replica stands 4.5 inches tall approximately and is about 4.5 inches wide at the handles.  Each is unique and each is hand made today as it was at the time of Christ.  They are imported from the Holy Land by Osmun Imports.  Each flask may vary in color from grey to tan to pink as it is dependent upon the potter.  The picture shown is a typical flask that we have in stock.  The string for hanging is not included.
