This replica of a clay jar found in the Holy Land is unique from the other clay jars and jugs here at Osmun Gifts. The handles are placed horizontally instead of vertical. This was probably not a jug for the table but instead was one for travelling. Due to the unique placement of the handles, it could easily be strapped safely to either the side of a cart or to a donkey, mule, or camel. This method of securing it during movement prevented the jug from being broken and spilling its contents. The clay reproductions of actual jugs found in the Holy Land are made today using the same techniques and methods as thousands of years before.
The photos shown are a sample of the pottery available. There are slight variations in the height, width and placement of the horizontal handles in each piece. Each piece is imported from Israel by Osmun Imports. Height may range from about 4 3/4 inches to about 5 1/2 inches.
Please do not drink from these jugs. These pottery pieces are not glazed. While the ancients used them as is, it is not recommended today that liquids be placed in them. Due to the nature of the clay, they are porous and would harbor traces of the liquids in them.
