Product Description

Ancient Holy Land Jug Replica used for Liquids

This replica of a single handled jug found in the Holy Land was used to hold liquids.  According to scholars, this could have been used for milk, oil, wine, vinegar or other liquids in daily use in biblical times.  It is a reproduction of a piece of pottery found in archaeological sites throughout the Holy Land.  Jugs such as this one are on display in various museums around the world.   A cork stopper could have been used to seal the tapered opening.

The size of this jug varies from 4.5 to 6 inches.  The size varies dependent upon the individual potter and the individual piece of clay.  These are handmade today in Israel as they were 2000-3000 years before.   The picture shown is representative of the single handled jugs that are available.  Each jug is unique and all are imported directly from Israel by Osmun Imports.

These pottery pieces are not glazed.  Glazing was not done to the terracotta pots in this time period.   Therefore, it is not recommended today that liquids for food consumption be placed in them.  The liquid will be absorbed into the pottery due to its porous nature.
